Everything published on Decor With A Dream is general guidance about decorating and home improvement. It is written carefully and in good faith, and it is not a substitute for advice from a qualified professional who has seen your actual building.
What we cannot know about your house
Whether a wall is load-bearing. What is behind the plaster. Whether your floor will take the weight. What the wiring was doing before you bought the place. Which permissions apply where you live. An article cannot know any of that, and a confident article is not the same thing as a correct one for your specific room.
Where to stop reading and call somebody
- Anything electrical beyond changing a bulb or a plug. In many places this is not just unwise, it is unlawful for an unqualified person to do.
- Anything involving gas. Without exception, and without a second opinion.
- Anything structural. Removing a wall, cutting a joist, altering a roof, building a raised deck a person could fall from.
- Anything requiring consent or permission from a local authority, a freeholder, a listing officer or a management company. Check first; retrospective permission is expensive and sometimes refused.
- Old buildings, damp, asbestos and lead paint. These have specific rules and specific dangers, and general advice is the wrong tool.
Prices, products and availability
Any figure quoted in an article is indicative at the time of writing, in the market the writer was looking at. Prices move, products are discontinued, and specifications change without notice. Nothing here is an offer or a quotation.
Results
Decorating is subjective and houses differ. We cannot promise that following a suggestion here will produce the result in the photograph, or that a project will take the time we estimated in your particular room with your particular walls.
