Mid-Century Modern

Mid-century modern is the most reproduced style of the last twenty years, which means the internet is full of rooms that own the shapes without understanding why they existed. The originals were designed around new materials, small post-war houses and a genuine argument about how people should live.

What still works: raised furniture that shows floor underneath and makes small rooms breathe, warm woods against flat planes of colour, and lighting treated as sculpture. What to watch: buying the whole room from one era, which turns a house into a set. The best mid-century rooms are about eighty per cent contemporary with a handful of pieces that carry the period.
