The entryway is the first and last thing anyone experiences of your house, and it is almost always the least designed. It absorbs shoes, post, keys, coats and bags, and then gets blamed for looking cluttered.
An entryway that works is a piece of storage design with good manners. Somewhere to put a bag down, somewhere for keys that isn’t a kitchen worktop, hooks at the height people actually reach for, and a surface that stays clear because everything has an alternative home. Hallways have their own problem — they are narrow, usually dark, and easy to leave blank. What helps is light, one good runner, and treating the walls as the room rather than the corridor between rooms.
