Open shelving fails for one reason, and it is almost never the shelving. What you need to own before you take the cupboard doors off.
Kitchens carry the highest cost per square foot in the house, which makes them the room where good decisions pay back most and bad ones hurt longest. They are also the room most likely to be renovated for the wrong reason — a finish that photographs well and then chips within a year.
What follows is written for both ends of the budget. If you are gutting the room, there are the decisions that are genuinely permanent: layout, worktop material, where the light lands. If you are not, there is a great deal you can change without touching a cabinet — hardware, paint, the shelf that finally makes the corner useful, and lighting that stops the room going grey at four in the afternoon.
